It began instantaneously, the conspiracy theories. The buzz words were quickly assigned by the mainstream press to any legitimate inquires about the latest unsubstantiated government claim that long sought boogeyman, Osama Bin Laden had finally been killed. The slide words on talk radio began their pacifying assault in a transparent attempt by the establishment to shut down critical thinking and have it fade to the background. The grown-ups in the media and government had once again delivered the truth to the petulant American public, doubt is not acceptable. With the track record of the Federal government and its lap dog of a mainstream media, who dare question why American Special Forces would take the trouble to extract a corpse from a hostile environment, in a country where we had no license to carry out this mission, only to quickly dispose of the remains at sea? Of course this makes perfect sense to the screaming hordes of lemmings outside the White House and in Times Square. It was “religious respect” said the Ministry, and this was all it took to ameliorate any nascent independent thought that may spring forth from the delighted citizens cheering for what amounts to death. I thought I was watching a World Cup game with all the flags and fanaticism last night. It is difficult to imagine that even one person in that crowd had a single question of their all-knowing, all-loving government. Patriotism apparently has been hijacked by blind faith.
As sincere as the folks in that throng may be, perhaps they just need some reminding of WMDs in Iraq, Downing Street Memos or Climategate just to get them going? To develop a list of all the government lies told in just my lifetime, would take a lifetime. Every statistic they render in their economic analysis is a fraud, every promise in a campaign is hollow from “$100 billion out of the next budget” to “I won’t have lobbyist in my administrator” or “you can keep your health care and doctor if you like” (I guess if you get a wavier as a political friend). It is only natural that rational people will view all government information with a skeptical eye. Weren’t we supposed to be out of these wars by now and have all our Constitutional liberties returned as well? I guess not so much. This country stands on the brink of implosion from any number of flashpoints yet the stream of government misinformation which has squandered trillions still reigns as the sole arbiter of truth. No proof is ever required, or in this case, no body or doctored photo even. The word “conspiracy theorist” is tossed around far too often these days. Conspiracy theorist now simply seems to mean anyone who discounts a government caught in continual lies. Conspiracy theory is now simply any analytical, systemic or critical thinking that involves uncomfortable subject matter.
However, what is not a conspiracy theory is pointing out the many inconsistencies in a government tale. It is not conspiracy theory to think past a public statement by a politician, a bureaucrat or a word reading bimbo or mimbo on T.V. posing as a journalist. It is not conspiracy theory to ask logical follow up questions and see if there is a logical answer. For instance, an immediate question came to mind with the first mention of Osama Bin Laden’s burial at sea which was supposedly done in accordance with Islamic religious tradition. What about Saddam Hussein who was bagged, tagged, photographed six ways to Sunday and then handed over to the Iraqis, no religious tradition there? I had never heard of an Islamic burial at sea, were they confusing Eric the Red with Osama Bin Laden with talk of this seafaring ceremony? As it turns out, there was no such tradition as initially described. Quickly this story evolved to put it mildly and now the government is simply saying Osama was given a religious service in the Islamic tradition before burial at sea. The context and tone of the original statement had been filed into the “misspoke” category. Quite a few public statements go to die and be forgotten in this graveyard.
The reason put forth by the Administration to dump, what for all intents and purposes is evidence, overboard so quickly was they didn’t want Osama Bin Laden’s tomb to be a shrine. There seems to be several logical follow up questions just waiting to be asked here, but don’t expect that from the FCC and White House compliant media. The first question may be, what is the actual harm in his tomb becoming a shrine? Is Osama Bin Laden not already martyred and a mythical hero to many fundamentalist Muslims? Hamas is praising the “Holy Warrior” and there are similar homages in Pakistan taking place already. Another potential question is, if his tomb were to become a shrine, would this mean radical extremists would journey to his gravesite as a pilgrimage destination? If so, what is the harm in that? Tongue and cheek aside, that seems like a nice little mouse trap for eager CIA agents to snatch somebody up for some good old fashion rendition. It would be fairly justified suspicion any U.S. agent would have of a person visiting the grave of the world’s worst terrorist. What a great opportunity turn those satellites and listening devices away from the American people for a few minutes here and there to track a real potential terrorist over at Osama’s grave!
Another question that may make a little sense; if we supposedly found Bin Laden from our wonderful interrogation techniques at Guantanamo Bay, would not an alive Bin Laden seem like a pretty good candidate to send on a permanent vacation to Cuba? After all, another inconsistency is the initial reports were the mission was first to capture, not kill Bin Laden. The government cannot claim that a supposed “terrorist mastermind” and Al Qaeda number one has no intelligence value. The government also cannot claim that keeping him alive would mythologize him when they are also making the claim that a dead Bin Laden’s tomb would become a shrine as well. Seems dead or alive he is bound for martyrdom by some followers of Islam, buried at sea or not. Also, the latest suspect Wikileaks release claims that Al Qaeda is prepared to unleash a “nuclear hellstorm” if Bin Laden is ever killed, so where is the value in killing him for our safety if we are truly to fear the threats from terrorists? I also know that NYCCan and other 9-11 victims family groups would have liked to seen Osama Bin Laden found guilty and made to suffer in jail before execution since many victim families of 9-11 also have unanswered questions, despite what Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly bark from their sanctimonious soapbox . I say face the evidence. All the power of the U.S. Federal government should be able to provide plenty if it exists. That is the price of having a Constitution and claiming to abide by international law, since extra-judicial murder is illegal under both.
There are many other potential inconsistencies; however most involve some degree of supposition. Here is a fairly objective article from Sky News about the lingering questions surrounding Bin Laden. By now, pretty much everyone has heard the theories circulating for years about Bin Laden’s death which emanate from terrorism experts of all stripes. Each side of the argument has its own set of experts to refute the other side’s assertions. Former Pakistani intelligence Chief Hamid Gul has been quite vocal for years about Bin Laden’s death and Michael Scheuer of the CIA seems pretty confident he was alive. There has been no shortage of credible appearing people on both sides of the debate. Was he killed in Afghanistan, Pakistan or did he die of kidney failure complicated from diabetes? In conversations such as these, most people simply do not have the relative expertise to judge the merits of each side’s expert opinion. It becomes nothing more than an exercise in bias where truth is derived from nothing other than faith in the position which one is emotionally wedded. There is nothing concrete to sink your teeth into with this one, yet it still raises plenty of doubt.
This still leaves one fairly large logic problem for the official version of events, and this is burden of proof. When a person or an entity takes an affirmative position, that is makes a declarative statement of fact, the burden of proof logically falls on this person or entity. In this case, the affirmative statement is Osama Bin Laden was killed by U.S. Special Forces and Navy Seal Team 6 as said by spokesmen of the Federal Government and the mainstream media which simply regurgitates. What evidence has been presented to these alleged facts? At this point, there are no facts, only circular arguments which amount to nothing more than the U.S. government which made the affirmative statement providing more affirmative statements as evidence. It’s an infinite, illogical loop.
Currently, the White House is “debating” whether to release any pictures; however they will show us the funeral at sea is now the breaking word. I wonder if any suspicion will present itself when the video is released. Osama Bin Laden, conveniently in a box, being pushed off the plank of a U.S. Navy ship is no cause for incredulity. There certainly was not much suspicion in the mainstream when the U.S. was able to positively identify Bin Laden through DNA testing and facial recognition so quickly. There are two potential problems with the accounts of positive identification of Bin Laden. First, the conclusive DNA match was announced early Monday morning in the U.S. This means Osama’s DNA was matched in just a few short hours apparently. It was later stated that testing won’t be completed for days, yet there was already a conclusion reached that “Geronimo” had been taken down. After a few visits to genetic labs websites and a couple phone calls I determined that for something such as a simple paternity test, once a lab has your DNA sample, the testing and delivery of results takes anywhere from 3 to 10 days. I suppose a U.S. Special Operation force includes a mobile DNA laboratory and DNA lab techs in SEAL Team 6? How else could we get DNA out of Pakistan for testing and verification so quickly? The other piece of alleged identification came from facial recognition. I suppose nobody else has a question as to how a man’s face can be recognized when it is supposedly so mutilated as not to be shown to the public. Many ballistics experts report that Osama’s head would have been nearly or completely blown off if the story of two shots to the head is accurate.
Right now, we have been given nothing as proof except the word of demonstrable liars. There is nothing irrational or conspiratorial to demand the burden of proof be met. We have an entire legal system based on the premise that the state must meet this philosophical burden when it makes a claim against a person. In the case surrounding the demise of Osama Bin Laden, the majority of the population does not seem satisfied with the emerging establishment narrative in lieu of a body. At this point, we are likely going to find that short of an independent forensic investigation of any video or pictures released, this matter will not be settled for most. If the Administration delays any further in meeting the burden of proof, the fires of another “Birther” type conspiracy will be fueled and eventually used as a political strawman in the 2012 campaign.

UPDATE: As of the headlines this morning, additional details of the story have changed again. Please see link here for further information.
UPDATE: Initial claims of a release of the Bin Laden death photo are false. The White House is still in deliberation over the impact in the Muslim world. However, the White House seems to have no deliberation over the impact in the Muslim world to dump Osama Bin Laden in the sea or there is no deliberation over the effects of unmanned drone attacks on innocent civilians. There is no deliberation over the legality under international law to perform extra-judicial assassinations, yet the release of a photo requires a great debate and stall tactics. Continuing coverage can be found here.
UPDATE: Even White House Press Secretary Carney appears confused by the ever changing story from his superiors. See story here.
UPDATE: How convenient, all the Navy SEALs allegedly in the Osama Bin Laden raid have died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan under highly suspicious and dubious circumstances. Pakistani TV and eyewitnesses to the raid said only one U.S. helicopter landed in the compound and then exploded on takeoff killing all on board. The Navy SEALs according to eyewitnesses never made it out of the raid alive and certainly there was no body of Osama Bin Laden to dump into the sea. The U.S. government admits to “losing a helicopter” on the mission confirming eyewitness reports, however the U.S. denies any SEALs died in the crash. This recent “crash” in Afghanistan appears to be the cover story for the dead SEALs in the initial raid. Dead men tell no secrets. Further information can be found here.
