On March 6th, the people of Cleveland voted overwhelmingly for their hero Dennis Kucinich. They recognize a leader who stands up for the people when they see one. Unfortunately for the people of Cleveland, their votes didn’t matter in the Republican-gerrymandered new 9th District in Ohio.
On March 6th, Cuyahoga County, which includes heavily Democratic Cleveland, backed Dennis almost four to one over Marcy Kaptur. Elsewhere, in the more Republican parts of the new 9th Congressional District, Republicans crowded into voting booths to help Republican-endorsed Marcy Kaptur pull off a win in the district that has been gerrymandered to almost eliminate the voice of genuine Democrats.
Last week’s school shooting in Cleveland reminded Cleveland residents how dangerous weapons are. The remainder of the district was mesmerized by commercials paid for with weapons money that portrayed opposition to war as if it were opposition to seniors, veterans, and workers. Republicans in the 9th listened when former Republican Presidential candidate Bob Dole and former Republican Senator George Voinovich asked them to turn out for Marcy Kaptur.
Ohio gave George W. Bush his second four year term in 2004. Cleveland didn’t have much say then as it didn’t have much say in this year’s 9th District primary. If Cleveland had been allowed its say, Kucinich would have been victorious on March 6th.
For the peace supporters, women, seniors, workers, minorities, and supporters of the U.S. Constitution, the fight has only begun. Americans are strong. Americans will do whatever it takes to keep Dennis Kucinich in Congress. We won’t let the weapons manufactures remove another hero from government. If that means working to convince Dennis Kucinich to move to Washington State or elsewhere, Americans are ready for the challenge.
